Beneficiary : James Mwangi Wachira Civil status: 65 year old peasant farmer Loan amount: $625 MFI: Juhudi Kilimo Activity: Dairy farming James Wachira is a resident of the Murang’a south district, Makuyu Division, Gakungu village in Kenya and is a member of Gakungu Dairy farmers Self Help Group. With the loan he bought a cow worth KShs 50,000 which produces 25 liters a day of milk. He is able to sell the milk at KShs 25 per liter and boost his income by $230 per month. James is planning to acquire a pasteurization machine through Juhudi Kilimo in future. This will help him overcome the challenge farmers are facing of low milk prices, by marketing other by products like yoghurt.
Beneficiary : Susanna Wanjira Civil status: 37 year old mother of four Loan amount: $375 MFI: Juhudi Kilimo Activity: Dairy farming Susanna and her husband Wanyoike they are bringing up four children in their Muthithi homeKigumo division. They are peasant farmers relying on their one and a quarter acre piece of land for subsistence farming. Susanna tooka loan of KShs 30,000 to purchase a cow which gives them 10 liters of milk per day. Within four months of acquiring the cow, it gave birth to a bull that they are bringing up to pay school fees for their daughter.She is paying her loan from milk sales and hopes to complete it within 18 months.
